Get up and Boogie! That’s right! Get up and Boogie!
I know, I am a freak.
I liked Disco when it came out when I was a kid in the 1970′s and I still like it to this day!
Whether it was The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, The Village People, KC and the Sunshine Band, Sister Sledge, or any of the tons of One-Hit wonders that hit the charts with disco classics…….I loved them all.
Of course, I had to keep this little fact hidden during my High School years of the early 1980′s because in that period, the popular phrase was “Disco Sucks!”
So, I made it through High School, happily chanting “Disco Sucks” with my friends during the day, while quietly enjoying my Donna Summer albums, with headphones on, in the privacy of my room at night.
I still don’t get what all the uproar was about. The songs were catchy, the beats were great, and most of the classic disco songs of the 1970′s are still considered classics today.
I can instantly recognize the first few notes of “Hot Stuff” or “Fly, Robin Fly” just as quickly as I can instantly recognize the first few notes of “Hotel California” or any number of mainstream hits.
Slowly, as time goes by, and with the assistance of shows like “That 70′s Show” and movies like “Boogie Nights“, Disco is starting to make a slight comeback onto the airwaves and into mainstream acceptance. I loved the Genre. I hope disco goes on for generations to come.
I have found but one current musical group that is actively trying to keep Disco alive with new, original music. The group is Scissor Sisters. I saw them on Saturday Night Live a few years ago, liked their sound, and proceeded to download a bunch of their songs. Listening to them is like stepping back 30 years in time. They do not do covers of classic disco but rather do all their own original songs. If you are a closet Disco fan like myself, you might want to give them a listen. They are great! Best Song: “Take your Mama out tonight”.

Disco rules! I’m with ya.
