Keep in mind, as the name of this blog suggests, I am an Idiot.
Over the course of my nearly 45yrs of music appreciation, there have been a small number of occasions where my Idiot brain was tricked and deceived into thinking that it was hearing a woman sing….when in reality….it was a Dude.
In all fairness, most of these songs were hits when I was just a kid. My Idiot brain thought that the theme to Sesame Street was an All-Time classic!……..
Here are a few examples.
First up is… The Stylistics with their 1974 smash “You make me feel brand new” which hit #2 on the Billboard Charts.
My Idiot brain had long thought that this was a duet between a male singer and a female singer. It is in fact, two dudes singing. Strike #1 for my Idiot brain!
Next up, we have “Jackie Blue“….the hit song by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils which hit #3 on the Billboard Charts in 1975. The first 9,329 times that my brain heard this song, I was sure that it was sung by a human of the female persuasion. Nope. Dude singing again. Idiot strike #2!
And next up is “Hot Child in the City“, a #1 Billboard smash from 1978 courtesy of Nick Gilder. OK, maybe the fact that his name is Nick should have set off a few alarm bells in my idiot brain….. But, the first hundred or so times I heard this song on the radio….I said “chick!” that has to be a chick! (this was before MTV and music videos…) Maybe Nick was a nickname for all I knew…..Maybe it was Nick Gilder’s band but he had a CHICK singing lead vocals…..Nope…..another Dude all the way. Strike #3! I’m out!
Any of you other musical Idiots out there in Blogland get fooled by some of your favorite songs?
I’m sure my Idiot brain will think of others that have fooled me over the years and as I find them, I will post them on this blog in order to further ridicule and embarrass myself. Undoubtedly, there will be a “Songs sung by Dudes that I thought were sung by Chicks Part 2…and 3….and 4…..”
