Sixteen Candles

Sixteen Candles is yet another 80’s teen classic from Writer/Director John Hughes.

Sixteen Candles was released in May of 1984.

The film starred:

Molly Ringwald – Samantha Baker
Michael Schoeffling – Jake Ryan
Anthony Michael Hall – “Farmer Ted”
Gedde Watanabe – Long Duk Dong
Haviland Morris – Caroline Mulford

John Cusack had a minor role as one of “Farmer Ted’s” geeky friends.

Molly Ringwald almost lost the part of Samantha to Ally Sheedy.

Jim Carrey auditioned for the part of “Farmer Ted”.

Both Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald were only 16yrs old when the film was released.

John Hughes stated that Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald initially did not get along together and only after Hughes took them to a record store and they discovered that they had the same taste in music did they get along.

That lovely birthday cake that adorns the table that Jake and Samantha are sitting on at the end of the film……was made out of cardboard.

The film was only a modest success at the Box Office but has grown to become a major cult classic over the past 25+ years since it’s release.

Haviland Morris, who played the perfect blonde cheerleader girlfriend of Jake, Caroline Mulford, is actually a redhead in real-life and wore a blonde wig in the film.

Gedde Watanabe, who played Long Duk Dong, was 28 yrs old when the film was made.

Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald went to co-star in “The Breakfast Club” in 1985.

Michael Schoeffling went on to co-star in 1985’s “Vision Quest”.

John Cusack parlayed his small role in Sixteen Candles into a starring role in the 1985 film “The Sure Thing”.

Best Line in the film…

“No more Yanky my Wanky! The Donger need food!”
