Rupert Holmes is a British-American Singer. Songwriter, Playwright, and Author.
Looking at Rupert Holmes, you would think that he was probably working as a High School Math Teacher when one day he just quit in order to become a professional Lounge Singer.
It looks like Lounge Singer is about the only profession that the man has NOT had in his career.
Rupert Holmes spent much of the 1970′s writing songs for other artists, among them, Barbara Streisand.
He recorded a number of albums but could not find success on the charts until his 1979 Album “Partners in Crime“.
That album would spawn three Top-40 Hits.
The first was “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” which hit #1 on the Billboard Top-40 charts the last week of December in 1979. It briefly fell to #2 before again regaining the top spot in January of 1980, becoming the first single to chart at #1 in two different decades.
This was followed by the hit “Him” which would peak at #6 on the Billboard charts in 1980.
His last hit off the album was “Answering Machine” which would peak at #32 on the charts in 1980.
He would have no other Billboard Top-40 singles in his career.
He wrote the 1986 hit “You Got it All” which reached #6 on the charts for “The Jets“.
He is a Tony Award winning playwright and has written many Broadway plays since the mid 1980′s.
He has written two novels, one of which, “Where the Truth Lies“, was made into a film starring Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth.
