Toni Basil is an American Singer, Dancer, Actress, and Choreographer.
For the purpose of this blog, she is a One-Hit Wonder thanks to her hit “Mickey” which hit #1 on the Billboard Charts in 1982.
As a Singer, she would chart no other hits onto the Billboard Charts.
Her single “Mickey” was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the influential singles of the 1980′s. (Was it that slow of a decade?)
She has done choreography on a number of films including American Graffiti, The Rose, Legally Blonde, My Best Friend’s Wedding, That Thing You Do, and others.
She acted in a number of films in the 1960′s and 70′s including Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, and others.
She was 39 years old when she did the video for “Mickey“.
Not that I know any “Mickey’s” Personally…But I would I would bet it would be hard to meet someone named Mickey for the first time without “Oh Mickey Yer so fine…yer so fine ya blow my mind….hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!” …screaming into your head. I wonder how many guys named Mickey changed their names after this tune came out?….
And…I would bet that EVERY Cheerleading Squad on the Planet did a routine to this song at some point during the 1980′s. My wife is a former Cheerleader and I could swear that when this song comes on the radio in the car, I can see her shifting in her seat and mumbling as she is undoubtedly reliving her cheerleading routine in her head……
Any former Cheerleaders out there to confirm this theory?
